Eminem Sparks It At Detroit Fireworks Show
Eminem is slated to perform at Rockin' the Rooftop fundraiser's annual firework display in Detroit next Wednesday.
The event is set to celebrate Detroit and its up north neighbor, Windsor, Ontario. The event is considered one of The Parade Company's largest fundraisers. The organization also holds the city's Thanksgiving Day Parade.
"The fireworks are a big part of summertime in Detroit, and I want to support them and the mayor," Em stated. "I've come downtown to watch them since I was a kid, and I'll get involved in something that helps the city any way I can."
This year's fireworks were in jeopardy recently because of budget issues regarding police presence. Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick first threatened to cancel the festivities, stating that budget cuts prevented sufficient police protection. Kilpatrick later ceased the threats.
Slim agreed to perform one song to open the fireworks after the mayor requested his support for the event. Tickets for the Target Fireworks, named after the department store that sponsors the pyrotechnics. Tickets cost $175. According to organizers, about 2,000 tickets are expected to be sold.
As part of the International Freedom Festival, the annual fireworks draw hundreds of thousands of people to the city's riverfront.
